C63 AMG Coupe Black

Mercedes-Benz has again blackened a model’s name but not its reputation after unveiling its fastest C-Class yet.

The C63 AMG Coupe Black Series was unveiled during the recent Formula One German Grand Prix weekend, with a 380kW V8 confirming it as the most powerful in Mercedes’ volume-selling range.

The fourth Black Series model since 2006 gains its extra power from a tweaked version of the regular C63′s normally aspirated 6.2-litre V8, which gains a new control unit and forged pistons, connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft from the SLS AMG “Gullwing” supercar.

Mercedes says the changes are enough to deliver a provisional 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.2 seconds for the C63 AMG Black – shaving two tenths of a second off the standard, 358kW C63 AMG Coupe.

A hardcore price tag is matched by a C-Class that has been honed for the track.

In addition to beefier bodywork necessitated by wider front and rear axles, the C63 AMG Coupe Black brings enlarged front air intakes, bigger brakes, 50 per cent larger oil cooler, a rear locking differential, adjustable suspension, lighter 19-inch alloys that save 11kg, and a dual-clutch gearbox that can change gears in just 100 milliseconds.

The coupe’s racier focus is completed by a cabin that dispenses with the rear seats for further weight savings and features bucket seats for driver and passenger, carbon-fibre trim, and an F1-inspired steering wheel with flattened top and bottom sections.

Two individual rear seats are available as an option.

For serious track-day customers, other options are designed to stick the car closer to the bitumen through features such as tyres with extra grip (AMG Track Package that also includes active transmission cooling) and downforce-creating body parts (AMG Aerodynamics Package).
